Nearly 50 tons of space debris crash onto the earth every day. While some debris shyly dissipate into the atmosphere, others display a spectacular light show. As comets travel, they leave behind trails of rocky material, oftentimes the size of pebbles or grains of sand, but sometimes as large as boulders. Every year, the Earth crosses these trails of debris, known as meteoroid streams, and the planet becomes sprinkled with rocky material. This heat vaporizes and illuminates the debris as they fall, creating streaks of light in the sky…. This Meteor Showers video from National Geographic explains the phenomenon, how we name the showers and when we might expect them.

It is important to understand the difference between the term meteor and meteorite. There are many pieces of matter, such as rock or dust, floating through space. However, some pieces of rock were already on a direct course to impact Earth. Meteors are very small pieces of matter, so they cannot be classified as comets or asteroids. The speed of the fall against the gasses of the atmosphere creates intense friction. The friction causes the surface of the small piece of matter to burn up, which is called ablation.
Shooting Stars on Fanpop
I was on my way last night to meet a guy that I had talked to online and saw a shooting star and I was wondering if I should take it as a good sign? I took a big chance on meeting this guy since we had basically only said hello to him thru a dating site. I am not by nature a extremely trusting person and I don't know why I went to meet him on such short notice but I am glad I did so far.
Are shooting stars really stars though, that is the question.? The answer is no, shooting stars are not stars at all, shooting stars are more meteoroids or meteorites. Good question.
